In writing his book, and in my reading it, Dave Burgess was able to open my eyes to a world of education that I had not yet discovered.

The simple decision to read this book as summer was rapidly coming to an end, was the single most important decision I've made as an educator. With an even bigger stroke of luck, I finally picked up a book that had been recommended to me years prior, Teach Like a PIRATE by Dave Burgess. Luckily enough, this group of children is virtually the same group of students I taught in my first year teaching third grade.

Since this is only my third full year teaching, I knew that connecting and engaging these students would be my biggest, yet most important obstacle to overcome.

Fifth graders, being the most veteran students in school, can sometimes become hubristic. For me, the "scariest" thought of teaching fifth grade was not that I would have to teach a new set of standards, but that I would have to create engaging lessons for the "coolest kids" in school. However, since I'd already moved from first grade to third grade, I was confident that I would be able to handle this challenge. Welcome to my newest adventure on my journey to becoming a "connected educator." As I entered this school year being moved into a new grade level, I anticipated there would be a mountainous learning curve.
